Jigawa SUBEB Considers Adoption of MuKaranta Literacy Program

The Jigawa State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) is considering the inclusion of the MuKaranta Hausa Literacy for Prosperity program into the primary school curriculum.
This was disclosed by Professor Haruna Musa, the Executive Chairman of Jigawa SUBEB, during a one-day end-line assessment and dissemination event organized in collaboration with MuKaranta Literacy Resources Limited and Bono Energy, held on Tuesday at Tahir Guest Palace, Dutse.
Professor Haruna Musa expressed his satisfaction with the program, noting its positive impact on pupils’ foundational skills, particularly in reading and writing. “The program has significantly improved our pupils’ ability to read and write with ease,” he said.
He also mentioned ongoing discussions with the program organizers on how to sustain and expand the initiative to more local governments due to its remarkable success.
In addressing challenges faced by the program, the chairman called on mothers and School-Based Management Committees (SBMC) to adopt a sense of ownership of schools, as the government continues its efforts to provide the necessary teaching and learning materials.
Professor Musa further commended MuKaranta Literacy Resources Limited and Bono Energy for their contributions to education in Jigawa State, urging other partners to follow their example in raising educational standards.
In his remarks, the MuKaranta State Program Coordinator, Mr. Bashir Yakubu, revealed that the literacy program had increased the proficiency of Jigawa pupils in recognizing sound letters from 2% to 92% within 18 months of intervention.
He explained that the program had been introduced in 198 schools, benefiting over 22,500 pupils during its operation.
Mr. Yakubu also confirmed ongoing discussions with the Jigawa State Government and donor partners regarding the possible extension and expansion of the program.
