Kano Govt to Establish Safe School Coordinating Command at NSCDC Headquarters

The Kano State Government, under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, is set to establish a Safe School Coordinating Centre at the Kano State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

This announcement was made by the State Commissioner of Education, Honorable Umar Haruna Doguwa, during a one-day sensitization program for the implementation of the Safe School project. Themed “Understanding the Basis of School Security,” the event aimed to raise awareness about school safety.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by Ibrahim Idris Abdullahi, the Civil Defence Public Relations Officer (CDPRO) for Kano Command, Haruna Doguwa expressed his appreciation for the NSCDC’s dedication to ensuring the safety of educational institutions across the state.

He emphasized that the initiative will provide vital security for schools, enabling a safer environment for teaching and learning. The commissioner also praised the collaboration between the state’s security agencies, which he credited for maintaining Kano’s peace and stability.

Representing Governor Yusuf at the event, the Kano State Commissioner of Internal Security and Special Services, Major General M. I. Idris (retired), commended the NSCDC’s role in safeguarding the state’s educational institutions.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing security measures, especially in schools, which have increasingly become targets of insurgency, banditry, and kidnappings.

In his opening remarks, the NSCDC Kano State Commandant, Mohammed Lawal Falala, stressed the importance of the Safe Schools project.

He noted that the initiative is vital in addressing the growing threats to educational institutions posed by insurgents and other criminal elements. Commandant Falala also thanked the Kano State Government for its continuous support.

The sensitization program featured four presentations from various security agencies, including the National Safe School Response Coordination Centre (NSSRCC), represented by ACG Hameed Abodunrin. Other presentations were delivered by officials from the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Police Force, and the Department of State Services.

The event was attended by over 250 participants, including teachers, students, community leaders, traditional rulers, and members of the Council of Principals and the Nigeria Union of Teachers. Senior officials from the NSCDC Kano Command, area commanders, divisional officers, and Safe School desk officers were also present.

The program concluded with a vote of thanks from the NSCDC’s Zonal Commander, ACG Haruna Bala Zurmi, who praised the participants for their engagement and reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to ensuring the safety of Kano’s schools.
