Centre for Gender Studies, BUK Hosts 7th Annual Education for Sustainable Development Conference

The Bayero University Centre for Gender Studies (CGS) has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing sustainable development through education at its 7th Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Conference.

Held at the Convocation Arena of Bayero University, Kano, the event brought together dignitaries, education stakeholders, and students to discuss solutions to pressing societal challenges.

Speaking at the event, the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Suwaiba Said Ahmad, highlighted the federal government’s commitment to revitalizing Nigeria’s education sector, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. She described education as the foundation for national development and a tool for addressing issues such as climate change, poverty, and inequality.

“Education goes beyond acquiring knowledge; it is about shaping minds to create a sustainable future,” Dr. Ahmad stated.

She assured that the government would continue to support initiatives like the ESD program, which equips students with knowledge and skills to address sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Dr. Ahmad added that youth are central to the current administration’s agenda. “Our educational institutions must not only serve as centers of learning but also as hubs of innovation and change,” she said. She emphasized the importance of investing in infrastructure, quality teaching materials, and an environment conducive to student growth.

The Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, commended the Centre for Gender Studies for its efforts, describing the conference as timely and impactful. “The Centre has remained consistent in its mission to promote societal growth and development. The university management is always ready to support its activities,” he said.

In her address, the Director of the Centre for Gender Studies, Ambassador Dr. Safiya Nuhu Ahmed, highlighted the success of the ESD program since its inception in 2017. She noted that the program has empowered over 270 students from more than 20 tertiary institutions, equipping them with knowledge and skills to address climate change, reduce poverty, and promote gender equality.

“The project integrates climate response into students’ learning and equips them to understand the opportunities under the SDGs. By focusing on youth empowerment, we are building a generation that will lead sustainable development initiatives,” she said.

Retired Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, former Chief of Army Staff, praised the Centre for its dedication to youth empowerment and environmental diversity management. “This program is a testament to the potential of our youth to drive societal change. I commend the Centre for its consistency in hosting such impactful initiatives,” he remarked.

The event also featured awards to outstanding participants and a showcase of students’ creative projects, emphasizing the innovative potential of young people. The Centre for Gender Studies continues to lead in fostering sustainable development through education, innovation, and advocacy.
