From Ibrahim Kaulahi, Gusau

Zamfara State Government has purchased new brand water generating and pumping machines to replace old ones with a view to bring to end the lingering acute water shortage that bedeviled some parts of Gusau the state capital.

This was disclosed by the Managing Director of the state water board, Buhari Salihu Dosara while responding to questions by newsmen who stormed his office in Gusau the state capital scouting for reasons of absolute water shortage that hits some parts of the state.

Dosara, who averred that, the entire water system supply in the state capital was established since 1992 by the former military head of state, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, said all the machines in use for water treatment and supply have became weak to serve the purposes.

According to him, the present Governor Dauda Lawal-led administration has summoned the management staffers of the board in it’s bid to resolve the long existing problems surrounding water treatment and supply to many parts of the state capital.

“We have recommended to his Excellency Governor Dauda Lawal that, the major problems were the weakness of the machines operated for the water supply, and the need to replace old pipes been connected to circulate the treated water for consumption of the targeted users.

“The Governor has agreed to overhaul the system being part of his campaign promises that he would put end to water scarcity in Gusau the state capital and other places across the state when he came on board Governor of the state.

“We told him, the machines could no longer be used to undergo all the integral processing to the finishing stage for public consumption which included water screening, aeration, coagulation and flocculation, sedimentation and filteration, as well as chlorination and supplementary treatment.

“Initially, the systems were installed for small scale consumption as Gusau local government area while under old Sokoto State then, but now became the state capital of Zamfara, therefore need to meet up the water demands by a high dense place, capable but modern machines are required before large scale water production is achieved.

“Also in the recommendations, we gave the State Government three steps which should be considered to arrest the situation, there is immediate solution which consist of plans for the temporary installation of machines, and the middle solution as well as long term plans which encompasses the installation of modern machineries capable of serving the multiplying population”, Dosara has stated.

He informed that, new machines have already been procured by the State Government waiting to be installed aimed to temporarily control the situation before finally to engage a refutable company to supply and install modern machines that will serve for long periods.
