ALGON Gombe Condemns Plateau Killings, Demands Justice for Victims
From Abubakar Rabilu, Gombe
The Gombe State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), led by its chairman and National Legal Adviser, Barrister Sani Ahmadu Haruna, has strongly condemned the gruesome killing of 12 travelers from Basawa community in Zaria.
The incident occurred in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
In a statement issued on behalf of ALGON, Barrister Haruna described the attack as “barbaric, tragic, and cruel,” emphasizing the need for immediate action to prevent such unprovoked violence against innocent Nigerians.
The victims were part of a group of 31 travelers journeying to Qua’an Pan Local Government Area for a colleague’s wedding.
They were attacked in a community in Mangu around 8 p.m. on Friday. The assailants reportedly killed 12 travelers, set their corpses ablaze in the bus, and left several others injured. Those injured are currently receiving treatment in a hospital.
Barrister Haruna called for calm and urged security agencies to swiftly investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“These killings, regardless of the motive, must stop immediately. The government cannot afford to continue losing its citizens in such cruel and barbaric ways.
This act is condemnable and unacceptable,” Haruna stated.
He extended ALGON’s heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for Allah (SWT) to grant them strength during this difficult time.
He also wished the injured a speedy recovery.
“On behalf of all local government chairmen in the 36 states of Nigeria, our thoughts and prayers are with the families affected by this unfortunate incident,” he added.
Barrister Haruna reaffirmed ALGON’s commitment to working with security agencies to ensure that justice is served and such tragic incidents are prevented in the future.
