Boko Haram ambushes Yobe Governor’s convoy

In a distressing incident along the Jakana-Mainok expressway, suspected Boko Haram insurgents ambushed the convoy of Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, resulting in injuries to six security personnel. The attack occurred while the governor’s convoy was returning from Borno State.

According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, the assailants targeted the security operatives accompanying Governor Buni’s convoy on Saturday.

Earlier that day, Governor Buni had been in Maiduguri, Borno State, attending the 24th combined convocation ceremony of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID).

Following the attack, Governor Buni headed to Abuja from Maiduguri’s Nigerian Air Force base, while the affected convoy returned to Damaturu, Yobe State’s capital.

Makama reported that the insurgents opened fire on the convoy, which was equipped with MRAP vehicles, a gun truck, and vehicles carrying police and Department of State Services personnel.

The security team swiftly responded with heavy gunfire, compelling the attackers to retreat. Unfortunately, two soldiers, a driver, and four policemen sustained injuries. Casualties among the terrorists remained unconfirmed.

Despite the tragic attack, security personnel safely escorted the convoy back to Yobe. The wounded individuals have been transported to the hospital for necessary medical attention.
