In a historic development, Cardinal Robert Prevost has been elected as the new leader of the Roman Catholic Church, succeeding Pope Francis.
Prevost, who previously served as the Prefect of the Vatican Dicastery for Bishops—the office responsible for overseeing the appointment of bishops—will officially be known as Pope Leo XIV.
He becomes the first American in history to ascend to the papacy, marking a significant milestone in the Church’s global history.
