The Centre for Gender Studies (CGS) at Bayero University, Kano, hosted a roundtable discussion yesterday focused on four significant research publications.
Supported by the Rosa Luxembourg Stiftung, the research was conducted between 2023 and 2024 and explored four critical topics: the impact of the Bwari conflict and the Enugu sit-at-home order on women, the experiences and conditions of domestic workers, Nigeria’s socio-economic landscape post-COVID-19, and the effects of the farmer-herder crisis on the lives of women and girls in North-Central Nigeria.
The event, held at the CGS facility, saw the participation of key stakeholders, including the Director of CGS, Safiya Nuhu Ahmad; former Commissioner for Women Affairs in Kano State, Binta Tijjani Jibrin; and Rosa Luxembourg Stiftung representative, Angela Oda.
In her opening remarks, Safiya Ahmad emphasized that the issues addressed in the research align with the core mandate of CGS.
She stated, “These issues are at the heart of the mandate of CGS as they are complex yet very critical,” adding that the center seeks to “raise awareness about the prevalence and impact the issues have on the lives of the people affected.”
Angela Oda, representing the Rosa Luxembourg Stiftung, praised CGS for its efforts, saying, “We commend CGS for their dedication and hard work,” and emphasized that the foundation’s mission is to “provide the resources and enabling environment to foster research that focuses on climate justice, peace, security, and feminism.”
Binta Tijjani Jibrin, who chaired the discussion, explained that the event aimed to identify potential gaps and challenges in the current research landscape.
She noted, “The discussion seeks to identify possible gaps and challenges that may exist,” and called for the need to “support capacity building for researchers to strengthen credibility and accuracy,” adding that this collaboration “will enhance coordination among stakeholders.”
The roundtable discussion served as a vital platform for engaging with critical gender issues affecting women and girls in Nigeria, promoting collaborative efforts to address these challenges effectively.
