Climate Change is a Present Reality: Educate the Youth -Expert

From Abdullahi Alhassan, Kaduna

A climate expert, Ibrahima Yakubu, has emphasized the importance of educating the younger generation about climate change, stating that it is crucial for them to grasp the science behind it and recognize its consequences.

Yakubu, Head of Communication and Strategies at African Climate Reporters, made this known while addressing students of Community Secondary School in Kaduna State.

He stressed that climate education nurtures critical thinking, creativity, and a sense of responsibility, essential qualities for building sustainable and resilient communities.

Yakubu noted that introducing climate education early fosters a culture of environmental stewardship, teaching children to value biodiversity, conserve resources, reduce waste, and embrace sustainable lifestyles.

These lessons, he said, often become lifelong habits, shaping responsible citizens and future leaders capable of driving climate solutions.

The expert urged schools, communities, and governments to prioritize climate literacy as part of broader strategies to combat climate change.

“Investing in the environmental education of children is an investment in a generation ready to confront climate challenges with knowledge, innovation, and determination,” Yakubu stated.

Yakubu emphasized that climate change is no longer a distant concern, but a present reality affecting communities, ecosystems, and economies worldwide.

He stressed that the next generation will bear the brunt of these impacts, making it crucial that children are equipped with the knowledge and skills to understand and address this global challenge.
