Ex-COAS Yahaya Advocates ‘Soldiers First’ Approach to Boost Nigerian Army Operational Efficiency
From Abdullahi Alhassan, Kaduna
A former Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Farouk Yahaya (rtd), has called for increased support and prioritisation of soldiers’ welfare to enhance the operational effectiveness of the Nigerian Army.
Yahaya made the call in Kaduna while delivering a lecture titled “The ‘Soldiers First’ Concept in Shaping a New Culture for Transformation in the Nigerian Army”, as part of activities marking the 162nd Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL).
He said the Army’s transformation drive must be anchored on the welfare, training, and combat readiness of its personnel, stressing that placing soldiers at the heart of institutional reforms is key to addressing Nigeria’s complex security challenges.
“The Nigerian Army operates in a volatile security environment characterised by terrorism, insurgency, banditry, and economic sabotage. To counter these threats, the Army must consistently review its strategies, improve training, and boost combat effectiveness,” Yahaya said.
According to him, the ‘Soldiers First’ concept entails recognising the unique challenges and contributions of soldiers, ensuring they are well-trained, properly equipped, and adequately cared for—both on and off the battlefield.
He called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts in critical areas such as equipping, kitting, accommodation, healthcare, and effective training to support the implementation of the concept.
Earlier in his address, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, represented by the Commander Infantry Corps, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, said the lecture theme was carefully selected to encourage critical reflection on the duties of soldiers and how to align tactical realities with evolving threats.
Oluyede highlighted that the Nigerian Army under his leadership is working to integrate the ‘Soldiers First’ philosophy into policy and practice. This, he noted, includes promoting leadership that prioritises the needs of subordinates and enhances morale across all ranks.
“The idea is that a soldier who sees his well-being as a priority for his commanders and leadership will be more motivated to deliver even under adversity,” Oluyede stated.
He further disclosed that training curricula across Army institutions are being reviewed to reflect the realities of modern warfare and evolving threats.
The Army Chief also restated his administration’s commitment to merit-based promotions, commendations, and rewards as a way of motivating troops and encouraging professionalism.
“Efforts are underway to empower junior commanders and create an environment that promotes open communication and information sharing without fear of reprisal. This will boost morale, strengthen trust, and improve the Army’s overall conduct,” he added.
Oluyede assured that the Nigerian Army will continue to take decisions that boost morale, enhance resilience, and improve the operational capability of troops.
Also in attendance at the lecture were former Chiefs of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Azubuike Ihejirika (rtd), who served as Special Guest of Honour, and Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai (rtd), alongside senior serving and retired military officers.
