…Directs SEMA to Provide Immediate Support

From Sani Gazas Chinade, Damaturu

The Executive Governor of Yobe State, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, has commiserated with victims of the recent flood disaster in the state and directed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to provide them with immediate relief support.

In a statement issued by Mamman Mohammed, Director-General, Press and Media Affairs to the Governor, Buni expressed regret over the havoc caused by the floods, describing it as a recurring challenge in the state.

“We have in the last few years been battling with the menace of floods in some parts of the state, destroying houses and farmlands. The State Emergency Management Agency is hereby directed to reach out to the affected communities with immediate support to ameliorate their condition,” Governor Buni stated.

The Governor also directed local government councils to work closely with SEMA in providing the necessary assistance to victims.

Highlighting the realities of climate change, Buni stressed the need for pragmatic and long-term solutions.

“The realities of climate change have now become consistent in our communities, and this calls for pragmatic action. The government is committed to finding lasting solutions,” he said.

Governor Buni further called for cooperation from communities in addressing the recurring flood challenge. He directed the relocation of communities living in flood-prone areas to safer locations to prevent further casualties.

“The council chairmen are directed to liaise with community leaders to move flood-prone settlements to safer areas. As rainfall intensifies, people in vulnerable areas are strongly advised to relocate because we cannot predict when floods may strike,” he added.
