Group decries persistent insecurity in Zamfara state, urges FG’s intervention

By Abdullahi Yusuf

The Coalition of Arewa Media Activists (COAMA) has condemned the “persistent’ insecurity in Zamfara State, describing the situation as “deeply distressing.”

This is contained in a Communique issued to newsmen on Saturday at the end of the Coalition’s emergency general meeting held in Kano.

The Communique which was signed by the group’s Chairman, Ibrahim Mua’azzam, said: “This Coalition observes with deepest distress that the security challenges in Zamfara State have become severe in the last three months, and are becoming worse by the day.

“The persisting problems of kidnapping, mass killings and banditry are consuming lives, ravaging economy and hampering any development in the state,” the Coalition said.

It therefore urged the Federal Government to “act decisively in order to rescue Zamfara State from imminent destruction.”

It would be recalled that bandits had on Thursday attacked the palace of the Emir of Maru in the state, and other parts of the town reportedly killing four persons.

The state Commissioner of Information, Munir Haidara, condemned the attack and condoled with the people of Maru over the loss of their loved ones.

Haidara said Governor Dauda Lawal of the state had directed the closure of the Maru market until investigations were concluded.

He said the State Government was working to ensure that the security issues in the state were addressed.
