Gwarzo Youth Forum Urges Consumer Council to Intervene on Soaring Prices of Essential Goods

By Mustapha Salisu

The Gwarzo Youth Community Forum has called on the Kano State Consumer Protection Council to urgently intervene in regulating the prices of essential commodities and foodstuffs across the state.

In a letter dated October 14, 2025, which was issued to PRIME TIME NEWS by the Forum’s Chairman, Abba Ado Salihiand and signed by its Secretary, M. B. Ribado, the group expressed concern over the continued rise in retail prices of basic goods despite a noticeable drop in the cost of key raw materials.

According to the letter, while prices of raw materials have declined in recent months, the reduction has not been reflected in the market prices of finished goods, creating what the group described as “an unfair burden on consumers.”

“The failure of manufacturers and retailers to pass on these reduced production costs directly translates into inflated prices for basic necessities,” the letter stated, adding that the situation has severely affected the purchasing power and welfare of low- and middle-income families.

The Forum urged the Consumer Protection Council to use its mandate to investigate the current market situation and implement monitoring mechanisms to ensure that consumer prices align fairly with the reduced costs of raw materials.

It further emphasized that prompt action would help stabilize the cost of living, safeguard consumer interests, and maintain market fairness.

The letter, also copied to the media, was received and acknowledged by the Consumer Protection Council on the same day.
