IHRC-RFT Urges Economic Security Measures Amidst Strike Threats

The International Human Rights Commission – Relief Fund Trust (IHRC-RFT) Nigeria Chapter has urged the government to adopt a more comprehensive approach to addressing the country’s economic and security challenges, amidst threats of a labor strike over salary increments.

In a statement, IHRC-RFT Country Director Amb. Abdullahi Bakoji Adamu highlighted the need for sustainable measures that benefit all Nigerians, not just the 1% who are salary earners.

The proposed measures include reducing fuel pump prices, Value Added Tax (VAT), stabilizing the dollar exchange rate, and ensuring security for farmers and pastoralists.

These measures, according to IHRC-RFT, will alleviate the financial burden on citizens and businesses, stimulate economic growth, and promote food security.

The organization referenced the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in supporting their proposals, emphasizing the right to life, liberty, and security of person (Article 3), the right to work and favorable conditions of work (Article 23), and the right to an adequate standard of living (Article 25).

IHRC-RFT appealed to the government and labor unions to engage in constructive dialogue, focusing on these sustainable economic and security measures to ensure the well-being of all Nigerians.
