Int’l Democracy Day 2025: CYPLP Empowers Next Generation of Leaders

By Mustapha Salisu

In Kaduna, as the world marks International Democracy Day 2025 on September 15, the Children and Young People Living for Peace (CYPLP) has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering youth and women to become active citizens and leaders.

This year’s theme, “A World Turned Upside Down: Democracy and Inclusion in an Age of Insecurity,” aligns closely with CYPLP’s mission of strengthening democracy from the grassroots level.

Through its programs and workshops, CYPLP has been educating and sensitizing young people and women, equipping them with the skills and confidence to participate meaningfully in the democratic process.

PRIME TIME NEWS gathered that, the organization’s initiatives, which focus on political literacy, governance, ethical leadership, and campaign management, are designed to prepare participants to transition from community advocates to political leaders.

“We believe that true democracy is not just about voting; it’s about active participation and representation,”

“Our programs are a testament to our commitment to building a more inclusive and equitable society. We’ve seen incredible transformations as young people and women, once hesitant, are now stepping forward with confidence to lead” said Dennis Ekwere, Executive Director of CYPLP.

CYPLP noted that its dialogue meetings and targeted trainings directly tackle systemic barriers that have historically excluded women and youth from leadership roles.

By promoting peace, social justice, and good governance within local communities, the organization’s grassroots actions are contributing to broader global goals, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — particularly SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) and SDG 5 (Gender Equality).

The group emphasized that empowering a single young person or woman to lead can create a ripple effect that counters challenges such as political instability, corruption, and social injustice.

“In a world grappling with uncertainty and insecurity, the need for a resilient and inclusive democracy is more critical than ever”

“Democracy must thrive not as an abstract ideal but as a living system powered by the people. Every voice, every vote, and every act of participation matters. It is our collective responsibility to ensure democracy flourishes in Nigeria, across Africa, and globally.” said Mr. Dennis.

PRIME TIME NEWS reports that the Children and Young People Living for Peace (CYPLP), is registered not for profit youth-focused organization based in Kaduna State, Nigeria.

CYPLP is dedicated to building community cohesion and promoting peace, social justice, and human rights. Our mission is to inspire, empower, and equip young people to become active citizens and change-makers in their communities.
