Kano State Deputy Governor, Comr. Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has been honoured with an Award of Excellence at the 21st Annual Conference and 2nd Conjoint International Conference of the Anatomical Society of Nigeria (ASN), held at the Northwest University, Kano today.
Gwarzo, who represented the Executive Governor of Kano State, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, and the National Leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Engr. Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, at the event, received the award in recognition of his profound commitment to education in Nigeria.
Delivering a goodwill message on behalf of Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the Deputy Governor described the occasion as “a celebration of knowledge, innovation, and national progress.”
He commended the Anatomical Society of Nigeria for its commitment to advancing medical education and research, noting that the gathering reflects the country’s growing investment in human capital and scientific progress.
The Deputy Governor applauded the College of Health Sciences, Northwest University, Kano for hosting the prestigious event for the first time, adding that it highlights the university’s evolution into a center of academic and scientific excellence.
He said the theme of the conference, which focuses on “Visualizing and Interacting With the Human Body in the 21st Century“, is timely given the rapidly changing global landscape in health sciences.
“The world is changing rapidly, and the field of health sciences must continue to evolve with it. Knowledge must be dynamic, research continuous, and collaboration global,” he emphasized.
Kwankwaso, through his representative, reiterated his longstanding commitment to strengthening education and research infrastructure in Nigeria, calling for increased funding for laboratories, digital tools, and research facilities to equip students to compete globally.
“Our government and private sector must work hand-in-hand to ensure that the knowledge produced in our institutions translates into real-life medical solutions that improve the lives of our people,” the Deputy Governor added.
The Deputy Governor congratulated the Anatomical Society of Nigeria on the successful hosting of its 21st Annual Conference, expressing appreciation for honouring him and also for choosing Kano and Northwest University as the host venue.
Also in his address, Vice Chancellor of Northwest University, Prof. Muktar Atiku Kurawa, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to advancing medical and anatomical sciences through cutting-edge digital innovation and academic excellence.
He highlighted the university’s pioneering Biomedical Research, Artificial Intelligence and Innovation Network (MedVR) project, designed to transform medical education through 3D anatomical visualization and simulation.

He announced the official launch of MedVR’s microanatomy component, Nigeria’s first digital anatomy database and appealed to the Kano State Government for support in acquiring advanced anatomical tools to strengthen digital medical education and research capacity.
Speaking earlier, President of the Anatomical Society of Nigeria (ASN), Professor S.D. Danborno, called on anatomists, scientists, and educators to embrace innovation and collaboration in advancing anatomical sciences in Nigeria.
He explained that the conference, themed “Visualizing and Interacting with the Human Body in the 21st Century,” is aimed at promoting new learning tools and digital technologies in anatomy and biomedical education.
The ASN President commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the management of Northwest University for their support, as well as corporate partners who provided digital displays and anatomical tools for demonstration.
He appreciated members, laboratories, and organizations whose contributions have strengthened the Society’s capacity-building efforts and encouraged young anatomists and participants to use the conference to promote unity, research collaboration, and scientific excellence across Nigeria and beyond.
