Kano Visual Artists Association Embarks on New Era with Vice Chairman’s Tubless Commitment and Operational Streamlining

The Kano Visual Artists Association (KAVASS) marked World Photography Day 2024 with a vibrant gathering at the Main Hall of Yusuf Maitama Sule University in Kano. The event, which brought together over 300 photographers, served as a platform to celebrate the art of photography, foster unity within the community, and highlight the importance of diversity and inclusion in the field.

In his address, the association’s Interim Vice Chairman, Nasir Rabi’u Tubless, emphasized the significance of World Photography Day. He commended the photographers present, highlighting the association’s achievements and outlining its future goals. Tubless stressed the importance of unity and cooperation as the foundation for progress, announcing the establishment of ten committees to streamline operations and enhance service delivery. These committees include Conflict Resolution, Tactical Strategy, Training and Workshop, and Culture Research and Tourism, among others.

Tubless urged members to uphold discipline and obedience, while encouraging leaders to lead by example and demonstrate kindness. He also pledged a donation of 50,000 Naira to female photographers seeking membership in the association.

Fatima Umar Said Tudun Wada, a prominent photographer, expressed concern about the underrepresentation of women in the photography industry. She called for increased opportunities for women photographers, urging individuals in positions of power to prioritize their employment. Wada concluded her remarks by advocating for the hiring of women photographers by First Ladies in their offices.

The event, moderated by the association’s Interim Public Relations Officer, Balancy Photography, witnessed the participation of veteran photographers with over 40 years of experience. These seasoned professionals expressed their joy at the gathering, urging younger photographers to embrace unity and collaboration.
Mr. Aminu Dahiru Ahmad, Senior Special Assistant on visuals and events to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), generously donated 100,000 Naira to support the preparations for World Photography Day 2024. Vice Chairman of the association Nasiru Tubless extended gratitude for the contribution on behalf of the association.

Abdulwahab Blue Lens Multimedia, a renowned photojournalist in Kano, emphasized the need for patronage from the local elite. He urged them to support photographers in their communities, rather than hiring photographers from other regions for special occasions like weddings. Blue Lens stressed the importance of cooperation among members and the overall development of the association.

This year’s World Photography Day theme, “Capturing Diversity: Through the Lens of Inclusion,” resonated strongly throughout the event. The theme encourages photographers to showcase diverse perspectives, cultures, and identities, highlighting underrepresented communities and promoting inclusivity in the world of photography.

The event served as a powerful reminder of the importance of photography as a tool for storytelling, cultural expression, and social change. The Kano Visual Artists Association, through its commitment to unity, diversity, and professional development, continues to play a vital role in shaping the future of photography in Kano and beyond.
