PRIME TIME NEWS reports that the exercise which was supported by EngenderHealth, the Legislative Initiative for Sustainable Development (LISDEL), and the International Society of Media in Public Health (ISMPH), aimed at strengthening transparency, accountability, and the quality of healthcare delivery across Kano State.

Speaking after the exercise, Hon. Ayuba Labaran Kabo, who led the delegation, explained that the visit was designed to assess the effectiveness of healthcare service delivery at the facilities.

“We have conducted our assessment and raised some observations. We assure that His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State, through the Ministry of Health, will receive a copy of our recommendations, likewise the Kano State House of Assembly (KSHoA). These submissions will be implemented to meet the demands of these health facilities, boost service delivery, and ensure necessary upgrades,” he said.

According to Hon. Kabo, Ganakakun Health Clinic, though situated in a rural community, has recorded an increase in women accessing family planning and other health programs due to improved awareness campaigns.

He, however, emphasized the need for the clinic to be expanded with additional restrooms and other facilities to cater to the growing number of patients.

“At Warawa PHC, there is a strong need for the state government to intervene and upgrade a facility which was initially built by a former federal lawmaker, so it can accommodate the rising demand for healthcare services,” he added.

The lawmaker also commended Warawa residents for their continuous support to health workers, stressing that such cooperation is vital to improving healthcare delivery in both the local government and the state at large.

He further assured that the Kano State House of Assembly (KSHoA), under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Jubril Falgore, remains open to the demands of citizens across all LGAs and called on residents to support Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf in achieving effective service delivery.

Also speaking, the State Lead of LISDEL, Muhammad Shuaibu, described the lawmakers as “partners in progress,” noting that the spot check was designed to strengthen collaboration between the executive and legislative arms of government for the benefit of citizens.

“One of the key functions of the legislature is oversight. This visit allows lawmakers to identify gaps in service delivery, determine areas that require adjustment or increased funding during budget planning, and support the executive where necessary.

“We are not here to defend or criticize anybody, nor to simply praise Warawa LGA. We are here to present what is needed to support the system,” Shuaibu clarified.

He further highlighted that the exercise was unusual nationwide, being the first of its kind where lawmakers, in partnership with the Ministry of Health agencies such as HMB, KSCHMA, SPHMB, civil society organizations, and the media, undertook spot checks at PHCs.

PRIME TIME NEWS gathered that community members present during the exercise lauded the delegation for the surprise visit. They noted that such efforts would motivate health workers to deliver more effectively, knowing that they are being monitored, while also drawing attention to challenges faced by the facilities and their host communities for prompt government intervention.
