A group of lawyers, who were standing for the Kano-based fiery Islamic cleric, Sheikh Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara have announced their withdrawal from defending him.
Abduljabbar is being remanded at the Kurmawa Correctional Centre after being sued by Kano state government for alleged blasphemy.
After being charged to court, the lawyers were engaged to defend the embattled cleric, who was charged with blasphemy at Upper Shariah Court in Kano state.
However, in a letter addressed to the judge of the Upper Shariah Court, dated September 15, the lawyers said they have withdrawn from the case with suit numbers CR/1/2021 and CR/631/2021.
The defence lawyers, led by Saleh M Bagoro and comprising H.G.Magashi and Bashir Savoy, in the withdrawal letter to the Upper Sharia Court, presided over by Justice Sarki Yola, titled, “Withdrawal from the case between Kano State Government and Sheikh Abduljabar Nasiru Kabara, with file number CR/1/2021 and case file number CR/631/2021”, said they have decided to withdraw their services after meeting with their client on 14th September 2021 at the Kurmawa Correctional Center.
“We hope the Court would accept our withdrawal. We pray the judge would do justice,” the letter, signed by both lawyers and Abduljabbar said.
Recall that the presiding judge in the case, Justice Sarki Yola, had ordered for mental evaluation of Mr Abduljabbar when he refused to respond to a series of questions asked him in the court at the last sitting.
Sheikh Abduljabar refused to talk after the government’s lead counsel, Suraj Said, filed fresh charges against the sheikh, something that created misunderstanding between the defendant counsels and government counsels.
