The Medical Director of the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Jos, Professor Icha Onche, says the hospital has officially commenced full orthopaedic and plastic surgery services.
Speaking at a press briefing in Jos, Professor Onche described the development as a major milestone in the hospital’s journey since its establishment by law in July, 2021
He recalled that the Plateau State Government allocated land for the project in July,2024 that he was later confirmed as substantive Medical Director in November of the same year.
Professor Onche, who expressed gratitude to God for the progress, appreciated President Bola Tinubu, the Federal Ministry of Health, and Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang for their unwavering support.
He commended the governor for personally funding the construction of access roads and other facilities despite the hospital being a federal institution.
Professor Onche announced that the hospital now has a full complement of 250 staff and over 700 registered patients, with about one hundred and fifty awaiting surgery.
He also acknowledged the Jos University Teaching Hospital and other partners for their donations and collaboration, emphasizing that the institution’s focus is on service to humanity through love, empathy, and compassion.
The Medical Director assured the public that the hospital is ready to deliver quality specialist care to the North Central region and beyond.
On his part the Director of Clinical Services, Doctor Ngwan Wujika, stated that the hospital has moved from outpatient care to full operations, including theatre services, admissions, accident and emergency care.
He outlined the services now available to include trauma and reconstructive surgery, joint replacement, spine and paediatric orthopaedics, sports medicine, and limb reconstruction. The hospital also offers physiotherapy, prosthetics, laboratory, and pharmaceutical services.
On his part the Chief Medical Director of the Jos University Teaching Hospital, Doctor Pokop Bupwatda, commended the commencement of full orthopaedic services at the National Orthopaedic Hospital Jos, describing it as a historic milestone for the state and the nation.
Doctor Bupwatda reaffirmed JUTH’s commitment to continuous collaboration with the new hospital, expressing confidence that under Prof. Onche’s leadership, it would become a centre of excellence in orthopaedic care, training, and research.
