NGO set to empower 100 GBV survivors in Kano

A non-governmental organization, Kasham Girls, Women, Youth and Community Development Network (KGWYCDN), has collaborated with the Ireland Embassy to empower 100 girls who are survivors of all forms of Gender Based Violence (GBV) with handcraft skills.

The project, tagged “Kasham Safe Space (KSS)”, will also build the girls’ capacity on mental health and psychological support to help them manage depression attached to their vulnerability.

It will be implemented in two LGAs, Tarauni and Nassarawa, for girls between ages 10-17. In addition to survivors of GBV, vulnerable girls with single/no parents will also be included.

The Organization’s Executive Director, Mrs Dinatu Emmanuel Ishaku, disclosed this to newsmen during a press briefing on Friday. She said her organization has held advocacies on the relevance of the project to district heads and 21 wards of both LGAs, and will accommodate 50 participants from each LGA, totaling 100 girls.

The project is scheduled to span for 4 months, and the young girls will be trained on handcraft skills like hairdressing, bridal henna, soap, bead, and cake making, among others.

“This project will create a mechanism of financial stability by building handcraft skills using available and innovative local resources at community level, equip them with business strategies and its sustainability, which will help them to gain full control of their mental health, while recovering and also become productive to themselves, their communities, and the state entirely,” Ishaku said.

She described the “Kasham Safe Space (KSS)” project as a big development for Kano state, and urged persons concerned to take advantage of this rare opportunity to heal, recover, and excel.
