Police Whisk Away Sowore After Attending Nnamdi Kanu’s Court Hearing

Armed police operatives have arrested former presidential candidate and activist, Omoyele Sowore, shortly after he appeared at the Federal High Court in Abuja in solidarity with the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Sowore, who has been at the forefront of campaigns demanding Kanu’s release, was reportedly confronted by police officers outside the court premises on Thursday. The officers, according to eyewitnesses, insisted he follow them to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command.

When questioned on the reason for his arrest, one of the officers said they were acting on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, stating, “The commissioner of police said we should bring you to the office.”

Sowore, who demanded to see a formal letter of invitation and insisted that his lawyer accompany him, was nonetheless taken away in a police van.

The activist and publisher of the online news outlet Sahara Reporters was among the organisers of the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest held in Abuja and other parts of the country last Monday.
