As part of efforts to boost food security through agriculture, the Senator representing Jigawa Northwest, Senator Babangida Hussaini, has donated 12,000 bags of 50kg fertilizer to farmers in his constituency for the ongoing rainy season farming.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony of the distribution held at Sule-Tankarkar, the headquarters of Sule-Tankarkar Local Government Area, Senator Babangida Hussaini said the fertilizers were provided free of charge to support farmers in enhancing their crop production during the rainy season.
According to the Senator, “We resolved to support farmers with fertilizer because it remains one of the most critical and timely components of modern farming.”
He further explained that his office would continue to collaborate with relevant federal agencies to ensure the availability, accessibility, and affordability of fertilizers and other farming inputs to enhance agricultural productivity and strengthen national food security.
The Senator disclosed that each of the 12 local governments within the constituency would receive one truckload of fertilizer for distribution to farmers at the polling unit level, in addition to eight extra trucks allocated to organized farmers’ associations.
“For the polling units, we are specifically targeting members of our political party, the APC, while the additional eight trucks are for recognized farmers’ associations to further strengthen their capacity,” he said.
He noted that the fertilizers had been officially handed over to the respective Local Government Council Chairmen, who will serve as heads of their local government distribution committees.
To support the logistics of the exercise, Senator Babangida also provided ₦500,000 per local government for the transportation of the fertilizers from the local government headquarters to various farmers’ collection centers.
He urged farmers to make the best use of the opportunity and called on members of the local distribution committees to ensure transparency and fairness throughout the process.
Speaking at the event, the Managing Director of the Northwest Development Commission, Professor Abdullahi I. Shehu Ma’aji, commended the initiative, noting that it aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at promoting national food security, poverty alleviation, and job creation.
Professor Ma’aji reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to pursuing and implementing projects and programs that would advance the social and economic development of the region.
On behalf of the chairmen of the 12 local governments in the constituency, Hon. Tasiu Adamu, Chairman of Sule-Tankarkar Local Government, thanked the Senator and assured him of a transparent and judicious distribution of the fertilizer.
“We will employ all necessary mechanisms to ensure that the rightful farmers and members of our party benefit from this support to achieve the desired results,” Hon. Tasiu assured.
