Sen. Umahi Directs Contractors to Free Federal Roads Ahead of Yuletide

The Minister of Works, His Excellency, Senator David Umahi, has directed contractors handling federal road projects across the country to clear all construction blockages and ensure smooth vehicular movement ahead of the Yuletide celebrations.

This directive was contained in a statement released on X by the Special Adviser on Media to the Minister, Hon. Barr. Orji Uchenna Orji, on Tuesday.

According to the statement, the order was issued during a meeting held at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja with the leadership of the Federal Ministry of Works, contractors handling ongoing federal road projects, Zonal Directors of Works, and Federal Controllers of Works from the 36 states of the Federation, including the FCT.

“The meeting was attended by the Honourable Minister of State for Works, Rt. Hon. Bello Muhammad Goronyo, Esq.; the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Rafiu Adebayo Adeladan; the Managing Director of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Dr. Chukwuemeka Agbasi; as well as the Senior Special Assistants to the President on Community Engagement for the South East, South South, North Central, and North West — namely Barr. Chioma Nweze, Gift Johnbull, Dr. Abiding Essiet, and Hon. Abdullahi Tanko Yakasai, respectively,” the statement read.

Sen. Umahi noted that the directives also include enhanced supervision of federal road projects nationwide to ensure the Ministry meets its performance benchmarks for effective project management in the coming year.

He instructed all contractors to immediately clear construction obstructions, particularly along major high-traffic routes such as Abuja–Kano, Abuja–Lokoja, Ife–Ibadan, Enugu–Onitsha, Enugu–Port Harcourt, Mararaba–Keffi, and Sokoto–Zamfara–Katsina roads.

The Minister further emphasized that the Ministry would intensify project supervision in the new year, stressing that all engineers, including Zonal Directors, must remain active in the field to ensure timely project delivery. He lamented that inadequate supervision has long hindered effective project management and delivery.

Senator Umahi also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for its commitment to advancing national development projects under the Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in the area of road infrastructure across the country.
