Transparency International Nigeria and the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) expressed deep sorrow over the demise of Hon. Ghali Umar Na’Abba, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives.
In a press statement signed by Mallam Auwal Ibrahim Musa Rafsanjani, the Executive Director of CISLAC and Head of Transparency International in Nigeria, the organizations paid tribute to Na’Abba’s resolute efforts during his tenure from 1999 to 2003.
They highlighted his staunch advocacy for legislative autonomy, unwavering defense of Nigeria’s fledgling democracy, and his commitment to upholding the rule of law.
The statement recognized Na’Abba’s instrumental role in bringing the 13% derivation fund for oil-producing communities in the Niger Delta into prominence, attributing it to his dedication to social justice and equity in Nigeria.
Acknowledging Na’Abba’s leadership qualities, the organizations praised his ability to unite the House of Representatives, fostering a front that demanded respect from the executive arm of government.
Additionally, the statement underscored the collaborative efforts between Civil Society Groups and the National Assembly during Na’Abba’s tenure, emphasizing the shared goals of legislative transparency, capacity strengthening, and constituency accountability.
Expressing hope for the emulation of Na’Abba’s democratic ideals, the organizations urged current and future leaders of the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly to follow his principled leadership for the betterment of Nigeria’s democracy.
