UNIJOS Set to Host First-Ever NUGA in North Central, Flags Off Awareness Rally in Jos

From Tongnaan Bawa, Jos

The University of Jos (UNIJOS) has officially flagged off its awareness rally ahead of the 27th edition of the Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA), scheduled for 2025 — a landmark event that will make history as the first-ever NUGA to be hosted in North Central Nigeria.

The colorful rally, which kicked off from the Hill Station Roundabout in Jos, witnessed a massive turnout of students, staff, alumni, and dignitaries, all showing their excitement and readiness for the forthcoming games.

Speaking during the event, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, said the rally marked the countdown to the historic 27th NUGA Games, which will begin in just a few days. He assured Nigerians that UNIJOS was fully prepared to host the best NUGA in the country’s history.

“We are here to tell the world that UNIJOS is ready. The students, staff, and the entire Plateau community are prepared to receive contingents from across the country. We promised Nigeria the best NUGA ever and we are going to deliver it,” Prof. Ishaya stated.

He also emphasized that Jos is safe and open for visitors, urging people not to be swayed by negative narratives about the city.

“As you can see, everyone is out, happy, and excited. Jos is safe, and we are ready to host the nation,” he added.

The Vice Chancellor expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for its support through the National Sports Commission and the Ministry of Education.

He particularly appreciated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his administration’s focus on sports and youth development, noting that UNIJOS had been designated as one of the ten National Centres of Excellence in Sports.

According to him, the university has already developed new academic programs such as Sports Science, Sports Medicine, and Exercise and Performance Studies to expand Nigeria’s sports industry and boost its contribution to the nation’s GDP.

Prof. Ishaya also commended the Plateau State Government, led by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, for its strong support in ensuring the success of the 27th NUGA Games, including financial assistance and provision of facilities to accommodate thousands of visitors.

“The state government has been very supportive because they know hosting over 10,000 visitors will significantly boost the local economy,” he noted.

Also speaking, Gad Shamaki Peter, Global President of the UNIJOS Alumni Association, described sports as a vital tool for unity and youth empowerment. He said the 27th NUGA Games would not only showcase the potential of Nigerian youths but also change the narrative about Plateau State by driving infrastructural and social development.

Chairman of the Media and Publicity Sub-Committee for NUGA, Prof. Taye Obateru, highlighted the significance of the games, noting that it presents an opportunity to demonstrate the peace, hospitality, and vibrancy of Jos.

“UNIJOS is ready to impact society, develop sports talent, and strengthen partnerships that will boost both sports and business in the state,” he said.

With the excitement building, the 27th NUGA Games at UNIJOS promises to be a historic event one that will unite students from across Nigeria, promote national cohesion, and showcase Plateau State as a hub of peace, hospitality, and sporting excellence.
