Unlocking the Nutritional Power of Zogale (Moringa Salad)

By Fatima Binta Idris

Moringa leaves, commonly known as “zogale” in Arewa, have been touted for their exceptional nutritional value and culinary potential. Rich in vitamins C and beta-carotene, quercetin, and chlorogenic acid, moringa leaves have been shown to act against free radicals, lower blood pressure, and stabilize blood sugar levels.

In an interview with PRIME TIME NEWS, dietitian Zainab Tauheed Sidi highlighted the benefits of consuming moringa leaves daily, citing modest reductions in blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

“This is because moringa leaves contain a high amount of fiber, which helps to slow down the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream, and also contains compounds that have been shown to have a positive effect on cholesterol levels” she stated.

However, she also cautioned against excessive consumption, as it may lead to stomach upset, nausea, heartburn, gaseous distension, and diarrhea.

“So, do not consume moringa in large quantities. It is recommended to start with a small amount and gradually increase your intake as your body adjusts” she warned.

Additionally, Zainab advised breastfeeding mothers to avoid using moringa, as some chemicals in moringa may be harmful to their babies.

“Breastfeeding mothers should consult with their doctor before consuming moringa, as it may affect the quality of their breast milk,” she said.

The Dietitian also recommended that individuals taking blood thinners such as warfarin consult with their doctor before adding moringa to their diet. “Moringa may interact with blood thinners, so it is important to seek medical advice before consuming it,” she cautioned.

Also speaking to our correspondent, Khadijah Ibrahim Binna, a moringa preparer, shared her recipe for kwadon zogale, a local salad made with moringa leaves, onions, tomatoes, and spices.

“First, you will remove the leaves from the tree and then wash and boil them for at least an hour, until they are soft”

“Then, you will bring your African Biscuit, which is kuli kuli, pound it together with your necessary ingredients, and then slice your onions and mix everything together. It is ready to eat” she explained.

On her part, Hussaina B Hassan, a moringa seller, noted the growing interest in moringa due to its health benefits, with customers patronizing her business and generating significant sales.

“People are very interested in moringa because it helps in the body, and they do patronize me, and I make a lot of sales with this moringa business”

“In a day, I make like N15,000 or so, which is a significant amount considering the growing demand for moringa products” she said.

Mallam Aminu Sarki, a vendor at Kure Market in Minna, Niger State, offers a variety of moringa products, including fresh and dry leaves, oil, and powder.

He attested to the delicious taste of zogale and its numerous health benefits, including immune system boosting, improved digestion, and reduced inflammation.

“I like eating zogale because it is delicious than any other food to me. And it has many health benefits, so I always make sure to include it in my diet. I also sell moringa products to customers who are looking for a natural way to improve their health” he said.

PRIME TIME NEWS reports that as moringa continues to gain recognition for its nutritional value and culinary potential, it is clear that this versatile ingredient has much to offer. Whether consumed fresh or dried, moringa leaves are a rich source of nutrients, making them an excellent addition to a healthy diet. With its unique flavor and texture, kwadon zogale is a dish worth trying, and its numerous health benefits make it a great option for those looking to improve their overall well-being.
