Unorganized or Sharply Arranged Protests Are Inappropriate at This Time, Says Ministerial Standing Committee on Military Veterans Welfare

By Awwal Abdullahi Aliyu

It is not out of place to protest, especially when there is a justifiable reason. However, as senior citizens, we must see ourselves as role models for younger generations. It is our responsibility to conduct ourselves in a manner that commands respect.

In any group or organization, there are always representatives, and among them, a leader. Whether we like it or not, the 5-man Ministerial Standing Committee on Military Veterans Welfare is the recognized body that engages with authorities on matters affecting veterans’ welfare. Criticisms of their perceived alignment with the government may exist, but the fact remains that they are the official channel and are doing their best under current circumstances.

Over the past week, the committee has been actively engaging with the government regarding unpaid allowances. From all indications, there is no evidence to suggest reluctance on the part of the government to honor its commitments.

The committee has been working diligently to ensure early releases of funds. The Chairman of the Military Pensions Board (MPB) recently confirmed approvals for both the 20/28% and the 32K flat rate allowances, including arrears. We are now awaiting the release of funds to the MPB for disbursement.

While initial setbacks arose from controversies regarding the beneficiaries’ list and alleged misappropriation by the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, the committee has persisted. Under the leadership of Air Commodore Femi Oguntuyi (Rtd.), the committee recently met with key officials, including Dr. Abubakar Kana, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, to push forward the implementation of the palliative measures approved by the President.

Today, the Permanent Secretary, alongside members of the committee and selected veterans, will meet with the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs. This signals ongoing efforts to ensure the directives from the President are honored.

It would be irresponsible for us, as senior citizens, to negotiate with the government on one hand while simultaneously engaging in disruptive protests. Divided voices will weaken our position and reduce our credibility in the eyes of the authorities.

In the past 48 hours, senior officials from the DSS have contacted us regarding the proposed protest. Our response has been clear: neither the CCV nor the 5-man Ministerial Committee is involved, nor do we know the organizers.

Critics who claim the committee is ineffective or compromised are causing unnecessary division. Such actions only harm our collective cause. Diplomacy and patience remain our strongest tools as we continue to advocate for our rights.

Let us remain steadfast, united, and committed to dialogue. Together, we can achieve lasting solutions for the welfare of all military veterans.
