Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State, on Sunday assured the readiness of his administration to conduct free, fair and credible Local Government elections in the state soon.
The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) reports that Yusuf spoke during a stakeholders’ meeting with the ruling New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the state at Government House, Kano.
The governor revealed plans to conduct the council polls in compliance with the judgment of Supreme Court that affirmed financial autonomy to the third tier of government.
Yusuf stressed the need for respect for the rule of law and commitment to financial prudence, accountability and transparency in governance at all tiers of government.
While assuring to facilitate free, fair and credible local government elections, the governor urged opposition parties to try their luck, “because my government will not interfere with the electoral process.
“Our administration has allowed the previous LG Executive Councils in the 44 LGAs to complete their tenure despite pressure from within, this is out of respect we have for the rule of law.
“So, our respect for accountability and in compliance with the recent Supreme Court judgment, my administration will soon conduct credible council elections,” he assured.
He said preparations by the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) on the conduct of the council polls were on top gear, assuring that it would hold any moment from now.
“We will soon invite you again for selection of our party’s candidates to be fielded in the 44 LGAs, who will run for the office of Chairman, Vice Chairman as well as Councillor.
“We shall run a peaceful campaign with the believe that majority of Kano people will vote for NNPP,” he said. ( NAN)
