From Ahmad Mujahid, Yobe
The Honorable Commissioner of the Yobe State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Associate Professor Abba Idris, recently paid a working visit to Girgiri Pilot Primary School in Nguru, where a “Teaching at the Right Level” (TaRL) step-down training workshop is currently being conducted.
During the visit, the Hon. Commissioner was guided by Mallam Hamisu Ado, the Education Secretary of Nguru Local Government Education Authority, to observe the workshop. This training initiative is sponsored by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in collaboration with the Yobe State Universal Basic Education Board.
Addressing the participants, Idris acknowledged the Yobe State Government’s awareness of the teachers’ dedication and sacrifices in reducing the number of out-of-school children in the state. He encouraged the teachers to intensify their efforts to improve their students’ learning outcomes, stating that their success in this endeavor would leave a lasting legacy.
“This is an opportunity that has come your way through your chosen profession,” Idris said. “I urge you to use this chance wisely.”
He expressed his gratitude to UNICEF for initiating this support, which aims to build the capacity of thousands of teachers across the state.
Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) is a pedagogical approach that focuses on instructing children at their current learning level rather than their chronological grade level. This methodology aims to address learning gaps and ensure that students are adequately prepared for future academic challenges. By concentrating on individual learning levels, TaRL helps bridge the gap between where students are and where they need to be, fostering a more inclusive and effective learning environment.
