Yobe State Honours Fallen Heroes, Donates N30m To Legion Welfare Fund

Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni,has officially launched the 2026 Armed Forces Memorial Day and Remembrance Week, urging citizens to honour the sacrifices of the nation’s fallen and living soldiers.

During the launching ceremony in Damaturu on Wednesday, Governor Buni described the event as a “cherished occasion” to honour the gallantry of troops who served in World Wars, the Nigerian Civil War, and various United Nations and ECOWAS peacekeeping operations.

Buni highlighted the contemporary sacrifices of soldiers combating security challenges such as the Boko Haram insurgency, banditry, cattle rustling and kidnapping.

“We note with sadness that in the course of these patriotic duties, many of our soldiers lost their lives, while several others were maimed for life in defence of our sovereignty, peace, and unity,” he said.

The Governor then announced a significant financial commitment to support the families of veterans,pledging a contribution of N30 million from the State Government and a personal donation of N5 million.

“I call on corporate bodies, religious organizations, public-spirited individuals, groups, and all well-meaning citizens in the state to complement government efforts by donating generously to the Legion’s welfare fund,” Buni said.

The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to working with the Nigerian Legion to support the families of fallen heroes and living veterans.

He directed the Secretary to the State Government to act on the requests presented by the Legion’s leadership during the event.
