16 Days of Activism: Kano Unites Against Gender-Based Violence in Awareness Walk

Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), National Human Rights Commission, National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and other civil societies added their voices to the call against gender-based violence during an awareness walk on the streets of Kano.

The campaign is part of activities to commemorate the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence.

Speaking on the awareness walk, the CITAD gender officer, Zainab Aminu said it was organized to create awareness of the threat of gender-based violence in the society.

Zainab said the issue of gender-based violence is a cause for concern, submitting that the civil societies and media had a great role to play in educating the people, particularly victims, to speak out.

Gender-based violence must be put to a stop because it is an evil act. It ranges from rape, battery and child molestation, among others“

Also speaking, the Head of Department Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Kano zonal command, Hajiya Rasheda Aminu Muhammad highlighted the need for a concerted effort to eradicate Gender Based Violence.

She said, NAPTIP zonal command which comprised of Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Kaduna and Bauchi states, was committed to eradicating sexual and gender-based violence, child labour and molestation, and human trafficking among others.

The road walk, organized by CITAD in collaboration with NAPTIP, Ministry of Women Affairs and CELOHA witnessed a large turnout of young men and women carrying placards with different inscriptions on the need to eradicate SGBV.

PRIME TIME NEWS gathered. the main thrust of the Coalition/Network (Civil Society Group) is to promote a gender-sensitive and gender-responsive culture in policy planning and national development.

A major tool for the required social transformation shall be the system-wide approach of promoting gender mainstreaming and women’s empowerment in all public and private policies and programming priorities and all organizational and community cultures in Nigeria.
