2024 World Humanitarian Day: Unite to Protect Civilians, Aid Workers – Stakeholders
From Umar Dankano, Yola
Stakeholders have called for greater support and protection for humanitarian workers assisting civilians in conflict zones worldwide. This resolution was made during the 2024 World Humanitarian Day celebration in Yola, Adamawa State, on Monday.
The participants unanimously acknowledged the dangers and sacrifices inherent in humanitarian work and urged for practical actions to safeguard the dignity of these workers in society.
In his keynote address, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohammed Malick Fall, emphasized the importance of standing in solidarity with vulnerable populations, particularly children, mothers, and those forced into adult roles due to conflict.
He highlighted the critical role of humanitarian efforts in expressing the true essence of humanity, as workers risk their lives to protect and assist those in need.
“All hands must be on deck to support those deprived of their dignity and human rights, especially in armed conflicts,” Fall stated.
He called for a collective effort from state and federal governments, civil society, national and international partners, donors, and the private sector to address both immediate needs and the root causes of crises, such as lack of education, employment opportunities, and access to basic services.
Delivering a goodwill message, Abel Entino, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, emphasized the significance of World Humanitarian Day as an opportunity to honor the dedication and selfless service of humanitarian workers.
Represented by Director Valentine Ezeh, Entino highlighted the importance of resilience in the face of adversity and the need for sustainable solutions that address pressing issues.
“We must reaffirm our commitment to protecting civilians in conflicts, ensuring the safety of aid workers, and mobilizing resources to meet growing humanitarian needs,” Entino said.
He also emphasized the importance of peacebuilding efforts and social cohesion initiatives, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, in his remarks, expressed gratitude to the organizers for choosing Adamawa State as the venue for this year’s World Humanitarian Day celebration.
He pledged the state’s support and cooperation with organizations focused on safeguarding human dignity.
The celebration was attended by numerous civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations, and representatives of people with special needs, among others.
