80 Nigerian Professionals Complete BioRTC’s Advanced AI Training in Yobe

From Yusuf A. Yusuf, Damaturu

The Biomedical Research and Training Center (BioRTC) of Yobe State University successfully brought together nearly 80 participants from diverse academic and professional backgrounds for an advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) training in Damaturu on Thursday.

Dr. Ali Bukar Maina, a UK-based AI expert and Deputy Director of ICT at BioRTC, explained the workshop’s evolution, saying, this is the third AI workshop and the fifth iteration of the summer school.

He revealed that what began as a small training program for medical professionals has now expanded into a multidisciplinary platform fostering AI literacy across Nigeria.

He noted that, originally capped at 50 attendees, overwhelming demand pushed participation to 80, noting that attendees ranged from university lecturers and entrepreneurs to AI enthusiasts.

“A significant number of participants came from Yobe State University, where BioRTC is headquartered, while others traveled from institutions such as ABU Zaria, Gombe State University, and private sector organizations in Abuja,” said Dr. Maina.

He emphasized their goal to make AI accessible to everyone, regardless of age or technical background.

“The workshop’s hands-on approach has resonated with attendees, many of whom come from non-technical fields but are eager to apply AI in their work,”he added.

Dr.Maina further stated that they are guiding participants to develop their own AI applications, with the long-term vision of building a skilled Nigerian AI workforce.

“Plans are underway to scale the initiative, including monthly virtual sessions and larger cohorts,we’re starting small, but our ambition is to train hundreds, not just tens, said Dr.Maima.

One of the training participants, Dr. Umar Mohammed Adam, a lecturer in Human Physiology at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, described the workshop as an “eye-opener.”

He explained that while he had used AI before, he hadn’t used it effectively. He stressed that now he sees how it can enhance his research, teaching, and even grant writing.

“The value of this training is immeasurable.I plan to share these insights with my colleagues and students,” said Dr. Umar.

With its blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application, the BioRTC Advanced AI Workshop 2025 has set a benchmark for AI education in Nigeria.

As participants return to their institutions and industries, the ripple effects of their training could accelerate innovation and digital transformation nationwide.
