Court Fixes Date to Hear Appeals on Kano Emirate Tussle
The Court of Appeal in Abuja has set August 12 as the date to hear all four pending appeals arising from the decisions of the Federal High Court in Kano and the Kano State High Court regarding the state’s emirate tussle.
Justice Hamma Akawu-Barka, leading the three-man panel, announced the date after the case was mentioned. Appellant counsel Chikamso Ojukwu made an oral application to remove one of the respondent’s names, which was opposed by defense counsel Mahmoud Mogaji. The court directed that a formal application be filed.
The pending appeals were filed by the Kano State government, the Attorney General, the Kano State House of Assembly, and the Speaker, as well as an interlocutory appeal filed by deposed Emir Aminu Ado Bayero.
The appellants are challenging the decision of Justice Abdullahi Liman, who set aside steps taken in pursuance of the Kano Emirates Council Law (Repeal) 2024 and ordered parties to maintain the “status quo ante” pending the hearing and determination of a suit filed by Aminu Babba Dan-agundi, Sarkin Dawaki.
The appellants want the Court of Appeal to overturn the order of the Kano High Court, alleging that the judgment was hastily entered on July 15 instead of the scheduled date of July 18.
