Kano Gov’t Reaffirms Commitment to Poverty Eradication

The Executive Governor of Kano State, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to tackling poverty and promoting inclusive societies.

The Governor made the pledge today on the occasion of “International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 2024” organized by the State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs & Poverty Alleviation at the Government House Coronation Hall.

Represented by his Deputy, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, Governor Yusuf highlighted Kano State’s significant strides in poverty reduction, particularly following the establishment of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

“We have been working tirelessly to ensure that the people of Kano State live a better life,” He said.

The governor outlined the administration’s multi-pronged approach to poverty alleviation, which includes economic empowerment, education, and healthcare initiatives aimed at addressing the root causes of poverty.

Governor Yusuf called on various stakeholders including government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and community leaders to collaborate in the fight against poverty.

He urged all parties to work together to build a future where every citizen of Kano State can live a dignified life, free from poverty and social injustice.

Speaking earlier, the Kano State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hajiya Amina Abdullahi Sani, outlined key initiatives implemented by the Ministry to combat poverty and support vulnerable groups during.

Commissioner Amina noted that the Ministry has been providing monthly financial assistance of ₦50,000 to 2,000 women across all 44 local governments

Adding the State in other to support vulnerable women, the state has extended aid to repatriated citizens, offering ₦100,000 and six bags of grains to each individual returning from Ghana

She also explained that for food assistance programs have also played a central role, with the Ministry delivering cooked and uncooked meals to 13 psychiatric and rehabilitation centers during World Humanitarian Day 2024.

“As part of social protection efforts, the government distributed tea packages and detergent to patients at Nassarawa General Hospital and Sir Sunusi General Hospital” She added.

Amina noted that Infrastructure development has been prioritized for those affected by natural disasters, particularly flood victim while the state is currently constructing modern housing across three senatorial districts to provide safe and secure living conditions for affected families.

The Commissioner credited these achievements to Governor Yusuf’s commitment to humanitarian services and poverty alleviation, emphasizing the state’s dedication to creating a more inclusive society where all citizens can thrive.

Also speaking, Aisha Abdurrahim, founder of the Aisha Women’s Right Foundation, donated essential items, including noodles, clothes, and rice, to IDP camps in Kano State as part of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

She also launched a training program for 100 young girls to promote economic independence and self-sufficiency.

Motivated by the plight of vulnerable individuals in Kano, Aisha urged young girls to prioritize their education, aiming to empower them for a better future.
