Kano Govt. Spends N1.6 Billion On Slaughter Houses’ Upgrade In 20 LGAs

By Abdullahi Yusuf

Kano State Government has spent N1.6 billion on the upgrading of slaughter houses in 20 Local Government Areas of the state.

The project was executed through the Kano State Agro-Pastoral Development Project(KSADP) in collaboration with development partners namely, Islamic Development Bank(IDB),Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Qatar Foundation.

Other partners in the project are:King Salman Humanitarian and Relief Centre and Islamic Solidarity Fund for Development.

The KSADP Infrastructure Engineer, Zahraddeen Hamisu Zarewa, disclosed this to Journalists at one of the completed slaughter houses at Kura in Kura Local Government Area.

Other local governments where the facilities are sited Zarewa said, include Rano, Doguwa, Shanono,Bebeji, Dawakin Tofa, Tudun Wada and Bichi.

He said the decision to upgrade the slaughter houses was informed by the unhygienic condition under which meat was being processed for human consumption in the mentioned locations.

“It is so sad that when you visit any of our abattoirs within Kano or any of our local abattoirs in the local governmentd, you will hate to even eat meat because of the way it was being processed and handledl. That is why Kano State Government decided to upgrade or create new abattoirs in the local government areas,”he said.

The infrastructure engineer said each of the slaughter houses was provided with four slabs, solar-powered boreholes, hangers, solar fans, cooler room, two industrial freezers, animal dung drier and the office of the Sarkin Fawa (Chief Butcher) of the area.

According to him, the slaughter houses had been handed over to the Chief Butchers and their teams to operate and maintain them.

In his remarks, the Chief Butcher of Kura Local Government Area, Alhaji Ubale Tantabara Kura, expressed delight at the provision of the slaughter house, saying the facility would enhance their business.

Kura, however, urged KSADP to provide a drainage around the building to facilitate outflow of used water from it.
