FRSC records significant decrease in road traffic crashes during 2023 Eid-El Kabir festivities

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced a significant decrease in road traffic crashes and casualties during the 2023 Eid-El Kabir festivities in Nigeria.

According to a statement by the Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, the special patrol operation, which took place from June 26th to July 1st, 2023, recorded 88 road traffic crashes compared to 118 in the same period the previous year, indicating a 25% reduction.

Bisi revealed that the number of people killed decreased by 53%, with 38 fatalities in 2023 compared to 88 in 2022. Additionally, the number of injuries decreased by 43%, with 211 people injured in 2023 compared to 373 in 2022. The FRSC also rescued 273 victims without injuries during the 2023 period, a decrease from the 347 recorded in 2022.

“The successful reduction in road traffic crashes and casualties can be attributed to various factors, including improved and enhanced patrol operations, extensive public enlightenment campaigns, increased visibility through additional operational vehicles, prompt rescue services, strengthened stakeholder collaboration, and the expansion of the FRSC’s presence with more commands, outposts, road side clinics, and zebra points” stated Kazeem.

He also highlighted the enforcement efforts of the FRSC, with 4,116 offenders apprehended for 4,682 offences committed across 2,053 routes covered by the Corps.

Adding that the increase in public enlightenment, enforcement, traffic control, cooperation from stakeholders, and the implementation of a fully automated process for obtaining driver’s licenses were identified as contributing factors to the reduction in offences and offenders.

The Corps Marshal expressed delight over the success of the special patrol operations and pledged to sustain the efforts to ensure road safety.

He urged the motoring public to practice safe road use and cooperate with FRSC personnel and other traffic law enforcers to further reduce crashes on the road.
