Sumaila Chairman Vows Support for AHBN, Kano CoP Zero-Dose Children Project
The Chairman of Sumaila Local Government Area, Hon. Faruk Abdu Sumaila, has reiterated his commitment to tackling the issue of zero-dose children within the constituency.
Hon. Faruk made this pledge during a courtesy visit by Dr. Musa Muhammad Bello, the Africa Health Budget Network (AHBN) focal person on the Zero-Dose Learning Hub (ZDLH) project. Dr. Musa, who led a team from the Kano Community of Practice (CoP), sought effective collaboration to address immunization challenges in the state.
Dr. Musa highlighted that Sumaila Local Government is among the 15 LGAs in Kano State with the highest number of unvaccinated children. He emphasized that the AHBN aims to implement the project by raising awareness, increasing immunization funding, and addressing challenges hindering the eradication of zero-dose cases.
In his remarks, Hon. Faruk expressed deep concern about Sumaila’s status as one of the most affected LGAs in the state. He assured the team of his support to eliminate barriers to immunization, improving sustainable health and well-being for children in the area.
As part of their efforts, the AHBN and Kano CoP team visited a health facility in Sumaila to assess the situation on the ground. The assessment revealed no vaccine stockouts, a functional solar-powered vaccine storage system, and the consistent conduct of four routine immunization sessions with outreach programs. However, challenges such as inadequate resources and power supply for effective service delivery were noted.
Dr. Musa affirmed that the successes and challenges identified during the visit would be considered in future initiatives. He also highlighted that similar projects have already been successfully implemented by AHBN and AFENET in Bauchi, Borno, and Sokoto states.
