Strong, Independent Institutions Provide Solutions to Corruption – Gov. Buni
From Sani Gazas Chinade, Damaturu
Yobe State Governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, has emphasized the role of strong and independent institutions in effectively combating corruption, misappropriation, and the diversion of public funds.
In a press statement issued by Mamman Mohammed, Director-General of Press and Media Affairs to the Governor, Buni made this assertion while receiving the new Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for Borno and Yobe states, Mr. Linus Gubbi.
The Governor highlighted that the establishment of the Yobe State Bureau on Public Procurement has significantly curbed over-invoicing, irregular contract awards, and the diversion of government resources.
“The state Bureau on Public Procurement has gained strength through its independence from government influence, thereby enhancing transparency and accountability in governance,” Buni stated.
He further commended the oversight functions of the State House of Assembly committees, noting that their interventions have added value to accountability and transparency in government operations.
According to the Governor, prudent management of state resources has enabled the execution of numerous people-oriented projects across Yobe. He added that recognition from the ICPC would further motivate the government to strengthen its commitment to transparency, accountability, and anti-corruption measures.
To reinforce these efforts, Gov. Buni directed ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) to collaborate with the ICPC in training finance officers to prevent financial leakages.
Earlier, Mr. Linus Gubbi explained that his visit was part of a familiarization tour following his deployment as Commissioner overseeing Borno and Yobe states.
“We are also on a preventive and public enlightenment drive to collectively win the fight against corruption,” he said.
He urged the Governor to establish Anti-Corruption and Transparency Units (ACTUs) within MDAs to support the ICPC’s efforts in combating corruption.
The Commissioner also congratulated Gov. Buni on Yobe State’s recognition for transparency and accountability. He commended the state for winning awards from the State Fiscal Transparency, Accountability, and Sustainability, a World Bank-assisted program as well as from the Association of Public Procurement Practitioners of Nigeria for its commitment to due process, accountability, and transparency in governance.
