Kano Government Reaffirms Commitment to Press Freedom Amid AI Era Challenges

As the world marks World Press Freedom Day 2025, the Kano State Government has reiterated its unwavering commitment to press freedom, ethical journalism, and support for media practitioners in the evolving landscape shaped by Artificial Intelligence (AI).

In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, the state government acknowledged the critical role of a free, independent, and pluralistic media in deepening democracy and fostering development.

This year’s theme, “Reporting in the Brave New World – The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media”, highlights the growing influence of AI on journalism. The Kano State Government emphasized its dedication to creating an enabling environment where journalists can operate freely, citing the surge in broadcast and online media outlets as a testament to its open and tolerant media policy.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration, the statement noted, has maintained consistent engagement with media leaders, promoting transparency and mutual understanding. The government has also provided support for media development initiatives, including capacity building and the formation of the Online Media Chapel, recognizing the importance of digital journalism in modern information dissemination.

While acknowledging the benefits AI brings to media—such as enhanced investigative reporting and improved fact-checking—the government also warned of the associated risks, including misinformation and deepfakes. It called on journalists to uphold high ethical standards and professionalism in the face of these emerging challenges.

On this global day of reflection, the Kano State Government paid tribute to the resilience and dedication of journalists across the state and beyond, pledging continued collaboration based on mutual respect and the shared goal of an informed society.
