Farmers-Herders Clash: FG Set to Establish Anti-Riot Police Units in Jigawa

From Mika’il Tsoho, Dutse

As part of efforts to address recurring clashes between farmers and herders, the Federal Government of Nigeria is set to establish an anti-riot (Mobile Police) unit in Guri Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

The senator representing Jigawa North-East, Abdulhamid Ahmed Malam-Madori, disclosed this during the Jigawa State Government Citizen Engagement Programme (JSGCEP) held in Guri.

He said the federal government also plans to construct 20 blocks of police barracks and a one-storey police station equipped with modern security facilities in the local government headquarters.

According to him, these initiatives aim to strengthen security and reduce the frequency of conflict in the area, which is known for its fertile land that supports year-round farming and also serves as a grazing area for both local and foreign Fulani herders.

The senator noted that the region has historically experienced farmer-herder conflicts due to competing land use.

He also mentioned the planned construction of a modern stadium in Guri as part of federal constituency projects, aimed at providing recreational facilities for the local population.

Additionally, he stated that several youths from the area have recently secured employment in federal security agencies, including the police and immigration services.
