Adamawa: Nigerian Youths Urged to Embrace Professionalism as AUN Graduates Over 200 in Class of 2025
From Umar Dankano, Yola
Nigerian youths have been urged to pursue professionalism in their chosen careers to enable meaningful contributions to society and global development.
This call was made by Mr. Brian Deaver, Guest Speaker at the 16th Commencement Ceremony of the American University of Nigeria (AUN), held in Yola over the weekend.
Deaver, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of the African Medical Centre of Excellence, Abuja, addressed the graduating students, their families, and members of the university community.
He described graduation as a major milestone, noting that students should remain committed to personal and communal development. He encouraged the graduates to embrace excellence as a daily habit, not merely as a goal or destination.
“To the graduating class of 2025, you are not the future—you are the present that will shape the future. Execute your plans today. Do it now,” Deaver said.
He advised the graduates to resist settling for mediocrity, urging them to pursue their best efforts in all areas of life.
In his remarks, AUN President Dr. Dewayne Frazier congratulated the graduates and encouraged them to be responsible representatives of the institution in their future endeavors.
He noted that the university’s curriculum is grounded in critical thinking, communication, cultural awareness, and problem-solving, in line with the American liberal arts education model.
A graduating student and valedictorian, Habiba Amani Abdullahi, described AUN as a community that promote both academic and personal growth.
She reflected on the shared experiences of learning and support that shaped her and her colleagues over the course of their studies.
“As we prepare to leave this place, take a moment to remember not just what you’ve learned, but who you’ve become,” Abdullahi said. “Growth isn’t always loud. Sometimes, it’s quiet—seen in how you’ve become more patient, more confident, more sure of who you are.”
She also expressed gratitude to her parents and others who supported her journey.
The event saw the graduation of over 200 students across various undergraduate and postgraduate programs. It was attended by members of the university community and guests from different walks of life.
