BUK Council Appoints Prof. Haruna Musa as New Vice-Chancellor
The Governing Council of Bayero University, Kano (BUK) has announced the appointment of Professor Haruna Musa, fsi, as the 12th Vice-Chancellor of the institution.
In a statement signed by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, the appointment takes effect from August 18, 2025, for a single tenure of five years.
“The Governing Council of Bayero University, Kano, in the exercise of its powers under section 4 of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Amendment Act, 2003, at its meeting on Thursday, July 3, 2025, considered the report of the Selection Board and approved your appointment as substantive Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano,” the letter partly read.
While congratulating Prof. Musa, Dr. Gawuna prayed for a successful and impactful tenure.
Born on June 20, 1967, in Dambatta, Kano State, Prof. Musa attended Sabuwar Unguwa Primary School, Dambatta, and Government Secondary School Dambatta before obtaining a BSc in Chemistry from Bayero University in 1991. He later earned an MSc in Polymer Chemistry from BUK and a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Bristol, UK, in 2009.
Prof. Musa began his academic career as a Graduate Assistant at Bayero University in 1993 and rose through the ranks to become a Professor in 2019. He has supervised over 300 undergraduate and 60 postgraduate students, published more than 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals, and participated in several international conferences as a keynote and plenary speaker.
The new Vice-Chancellor brings vast administrative experience to the role, having served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Head of the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry, and Chair of various university committees. He has also contributed to national and international research projects, including the development of rechargeable zinc-air batteries and sustainable plastics recycling collaborations with institutions in the US, India, Morocco, and Saudi Arabia.
A fellow of several professional bodies, including the Fellow Security Institute (fsi) and Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria (FICCON), Prof. Musa is also the founder of the Dambatta Educational Development Initiative (DEDI), an NGO supporting underprivileged students.
He is married with children and enjoys reading, research, travelling, and football.
