Wawa-Zange Grazing Reserve Set for Major Upgrade as FG, Gombe Deepen Livestock Sector Collaboration

From Abubakar, Rabilu Gombe

The Federal Government and Gombe State are strengthening ties to accelerate livestock transformation at the Wawa-Zange Grazing Reserve, a key component of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

A delegation from the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, led by Mr. Abubakar Sadiq, visited the 146,000-hectare reserve for an on-the-spot assessment of facilities and infrastructure.

The team inspected key assets including a veterinary clinic, nomadic school, healthcare centre, and milk collection point, all of which are set for upgrade under the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project.

Mr. Sadiq said the visit was aimed at aligning federal support with the state’s comprehensive master plan and evaluating the engineering design for the water canalization project that will draw water from River Gongola to solve persistent water challenges in the reserve.

“We’re impressed with the groundwork laid by Gombe State and are committed to supporting this transformation drive,” he stated.

The Gombe L-PRES Coordinator, Professor Usman Bello Abubakar, emphasized the state’s readiness and highlighted the availability of a detailed master plan that includes road networks, feedlots, energy systems, livestock markets, and dairy and beef production hubs.

He added that feasibility studies and technical designs for water supply infrastructure have been completed, setting the stage for implementation.

This development follows an earlier visit by the Honourable Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, who participated in the groundbreaking of the Gombe Agro-Livestock Development Zone—an initiative featuring an ultramodern abattoir, international markets, and an inland dry port.

The Federal Ministry confirmed that project implementation in partnership with the Gombe State Government will commence soon, positioning Wawa-Zange as a flagship livestock development hub in Nigeria.
