Kano CSOs Condemn Open Letter to Commissioner Waiya, Describe It as Misleading, Politically Motivated

By Mustapha Salisu

The Kano State Patriotic Civil Society Organisations (KSPCSOs) have issued a strongly worded response to a recent open letter written by Mr. Aminu Abba Kwaru, describing the publication as misleading, biased, and a distortion of facts aimed at discrediting the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Hon. Ibrahim A. Waiya.

In a statement jointly signed by the Convener, Hassan Ibrahim Gama, and the Co-Convener, Mustapha Muhammed, the coalition expressed disappointment over what they termed as “a curious blend of misinformation, personal grievance, and political bitterness” disguised as a call for public accountability.

The CSOs particularly faulted Mr. Kwaru’s questioning of Hon. Waiya’s emergence as President of the Kano Civil Society Forum (KCSF), clarifying that the leadership of the Forum was a product of consensus by respected stakeholders who endorsed Waiya based on his track record and civic commitment.

The statement stressed that the process was transparent and widely accepted, adding that Kwaru’s organisation is neither recognised as a member of the Forum nor known within Kano’s civil society ecosystem.

On the controversial emirate issue raised by Mr. Kwaru, the group criticised his lack of nuance and accused him of making character assassinations under the guise of public commentary. The CSOs insisted that matters relating to traditional institutions are guided by law and governance realities, not public sentiment or street-level narratives.

Addressing Kwaru’s insinuations regarding the professional backgrounds of public officials, the coalition argued that leadership should not be judged by business ownership but by one’s dedication to service. They warned against equating public service with private wealth, noting that such views are not only flawed but also disrespect the democratic process.

The CSOs also expressed concern over the tone of Mr. Kwaru’s letter, describing it as laced with insults, mockery, and veiled threats. They noted that such an approach undermines civil discourse and reflects poorly on someone who once held leadership positions in organisations like MACOSA and the NUJ.

Furthermore, the group defended Hon. Waiya’s performance as Commissioner, highlighting his transparent communication of government policies and dedication to public service. They welcomed constructive criticism but emphasized that such engagements must be grounded in truth and civility.

In conclusion, the coalition described Mr. Kwaru’s open letter as an expression of personal frustration and political mischief, warning that bitterness should not dictate the tone or content of public dialogue. They called for future conversations to be centered on ideas and constructive engagement rather than insults and misinformation.
