World Hepatitis Day: NOA Urges Global Support to Eliminate Hepatitis
From Mika’il Tsoho, Dutse
As the world marks World Hepatitis Day, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has called on Nigerians to join hands with the global community in the fight to eliminate the disease.
The appeal was made by the Jigawa State Director of NOA, Malam Ahmad Ibrahim, in a statement signed by the Head of Media and Communications Unit, Sarah Ogodo, and made available to journalists in Dutse.
Malam Ibrahim explained that the theme for this year’s commemoration, “Hepatitis: Let’s Break It Down,” emphasizes the need for urgent and concerted efforts to remove financial, social and systemic barriers that hinder the elimination of the deadly disease.
He described hepatitis as a dangerous inflammation of the liver caused by viruses such as Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E, noting that Hepatitis B and C are the most deadly forms, often leading to liver cancer and death if untreated.
“Hepatitis is preventable and treatable. Knowing our status is very crucial because many people living with hepatitis are unaware of it. We must all get tested today at hospitals or health centres,” he urged.
The NOA Director also appealed to the public to take advantage of the safe, effective, and available vaccination against Hepatitis B.
He further advised Nigerians to adopt healthy practices such as avoiding the sharing of sharp objects like razors and needles, and ensuring that blood transfusions are properly screened.
Malam Ibrahim cautioned against the stigmatization of people living with hepatitis, stressing that they deserve support and compassion rather than discrimination.
