Kano State Assembly Holds 3-Day Legislative Retreat in Abuja

The Kano State House of Assembly has commenced a 3-day retreat for its Honourable Members and Management Staff in Abuja, with a focus on strengthening legislative effectiveness, constitutional responsibilities, and oversight functions.

The retreat, which began on Monday, August 4, 2025, is organized in collaboration with SAHL Human Resources and features detailed sessions on constitutional appropriation powers, the role of committees in the budget process, management of constituency relations, and corporate governance within parliamentary institutions.

According to a statement by Kamaluddeen Sani Shawai, Chief Press Secretary to the Rt. Honourable Speaker, the retreat aims to enhance the capacity of lawmakers and Assembly staff in the discharge of their legislative duties.

In his opening address, Speaker Jibril Ismail Falgore expressed appreciation to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his continued support and the cordial relationship between the Executive and the Legislature.

“On behalf of Members and Management Staff of the Assembly, I wish to express our profound gratitude to Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf for the support he has consistently extended to the Honourable House towards the realization of this annual exercise. The gesture is a source of inspiration and worthy of commendation,” the Speaker stated.

Falgore also reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to embracing innovative tools, including technology and data analytics, to improve legislative oversight and promote transparency in governance.

The retreat will also examine the functions and challenges of the State House of Assembly Service Commission, as well as the role of the Public Accounts Committee and its interface with other committees.

Professor Aminu Umar, speaking on behalf of SAHL Human Resources, commended the Assembly’s dedication to institutional capacity-building, while Professor Abdullahi S. Danwanka presented expert insights into the synergy of legislative committees in the appropriation process.

The retreat is expected to conclude on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
