JUST IN: APC Demands Cancellation of Kano Bye-Elections Over Alleged Violence
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to cancel the bye-election in Shanono/Bagwai State Constituency and the rerun election in Ghari Constituency, Kano State, citing widespread violence and disruption.
In a statement issued on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the party alleged that armed thugs invaded several polling units in the affected areas, forcing voters to flee while overwhelming security personnel.
The APC said the situation made the conduct of a credible election impossible, describing the atmosphere as one of “utter brigandage and outright violent voter intimidation.”
“Proceeding with the elections under such conditions would not only violate democratic principles of free, fair and peaceful elections, but also set a dangerous precedent for unacceptable electoral malpractice,” the statement read.
The party urged INEC to take urgent steps to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy by halting the exercise in the troubled constituencies.
