FRSC Revives Annual Lecture Series Under Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has revived its prestigious Annual Lecture Series, marking a major milestone in the agency’s renewed commitment to safer roads under the leadership of Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, mni.
The 8th edition of the Lecture Series took place on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at the Banquet Hall of the State House, Presidential Villa, Abuja. The event brought together government officials, security chiefs, academics, legal practitioners, international organisations, and road safety advocates to deliberate on strategies for safer highways and sustainable mobility.
Established in 2009, the FRSC Annual Lecture Series serves as a platform for policy direction, knowledge sharing, and public engagement on the menace of road crashes. Past editions have featured prominent figures including Chief Emeka Anyaoku, Prince Michael of Kent, Jean Todt, and former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama.
Speaking at the event, Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Special Guest of Honour, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to safer roads. He urged stakeholders to recommit to the Nigeria Road Safety Strategy, stressing the need for both homegrown solutions and international collaboration.
This year’s theme, “Road Safety Management and Emerging Transportation Trends: Global Partnership for Optimal Performance,” was described as timely and forward-looking. The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Saul Billingsley, Executive Director of the FIA Foundation, London. Other distinguished discussants included Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, President of the Court of Appeal; General Christopher Musa, Chief of Defence Staff; Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy; Prof. Patricia Manko Lar, Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja; and Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, President of the Nigerian Bar Association.
Highlighting his reforms, Corps Marshal Mohammed noted that the FRSC has introduced an electronic document management system, enhanced inter-agency security collaboration, strengthened partnerships with universities and innovators, and expanded driver training programmes. He emphasised that the Lecture Series is not about prestige but about saving lives and reducing the economic and social toll of road crashes.
“Every crash prevented is not just an enforcement victory, but a triumph for public health and economic growth,” he said.
The Lecture Series, which had been on hold for some years, was described as a rebirth and a renewed national conversation on mobility in the 21st century. Stakeholders agreed that road safety is not only a transport issue but a critical factor in national development.
The FRSC pledged that under its present leadership, it will continue to pursue innovation, technology-driven solutions, and collaboration to ensure Nigeria’s roads are safer, smarter, and shared by all.
